DISTRICT NEWS.

TANGITU.

(Own Correspondent.) The results achieved by the aspirants for Proficiency Certificates at the Mapiu school last week is something that the schoolmistress, Mrs M. E. Macfarlane, the successful candidates, the parents and the district as a whole can be proud of. All the candidates for the xamination secured certificates. The work done by Mrs Macfarlane amongst the Mapiu school pupils has always been classed as of a very high order, but this year she has reached the pinnacle of success in her efforts. The general work of the school is excellent,, but the Proficiency examination results are outstanding;. The school committee must be proud of having the responsibility of administering affairs in connection with such a school and schoolmistress. The names of the successful candidates are as follows:Monica Shivnan, Rata Donnelly, Sidney Morley, ’Margaret Amrein (all Proficiency), William Schou (Competency). The latter was a Standard V pupil. There were no candidates for Proficiency Certificates from the Tangitu school, but the report of the general work done by the pupils from the Inspector is one that the teacher, Mr F. Proctor, can be proud of. We look forward with pleasure to the Mapiu school concert to he held on Saturday, 17th inst. From all evidence there will be a record attendance. Following this, on Monday, 19th inst., will be held the social and dance under the auspices of the Tangitu School Committee, when the annual prizes will be presented to the pupils for attendance, merit and good conduct, by Mrs J. C. Rolleston. The Mokauiti timber lorries have not been very active during the last week owing to the receiving end for the timber being congested, and I am led to believe that the position will remain so for a few days yet. The good weather now being enjoyed here cannot bo made full use of, and this is an important item to the carriers. Mr R. Dry, who has been head porter at tho Waimiha railway station for some years, is about to be transferred to Waikino bag station, and it will be a great loss to lose himself and the good wife from the district. They will carry away with them the heartfelt desire of all for success and happiness in their new sphere of activity. Some of us here who knew the late Mr C. Schou, Te Kuiti, whose death was reported last week, wish through this column to convey to his bereaved widow and family our sincere and heartfelt sympathy. We had been in close touch with him on occasions, and found him to be what is so feelin ly reported in the obituary column of the Chronicle of December 6th. The dance held in the Tangitu Hall on Saturday, 10th inst., was not very largely attended, and the children’s prize and picnic fund will only benefit to a very meagre extent, but those present seemed to have fully enjoyed themselves. Mr P. Goulding at the piano was) as usual, at his best, and a yonjng gentelernan whose name I did not obtain is to be thanked for his exjtras on (the banjot-mandolin, which were greatly enjoyed by the audience, and the extras played on the piano by Mr A. Sliaw, Mokauiti, were delightful and evidence of which was plainly shown by the dancing enthusiasts.
