BOROUGH COUNCIL.

MONTHLY MEETING. . The monthly meeting of the Te Kuiti Borough Council was held last night, there being present the Mayor (Mr H. Rothery), Crs Walker, Blackman, Boddie, Peterson, O’Connell, and Oliver, the Town Clerk (Mr Tate), and the Engineer (Mr Mainland). An apology for absence was received from Cr Hitchcock. CORRESPONDENCE. G. Goocley wrote in respect to the state of the open drain in King Street, which had not been cleaned out for some time, the consequence being that his and the adjoining properties were Hooded during heavy rains. ,The engineer was instructed to have the drain cleaned out, members of the Council agreeing that there was just cause for complaint. A letter was received from the Minister of Internal Affairs setting out the terms of the Local Bodies Loans Act; also a letter giving particulars of the Town Planning Act. These were referred to the new Council, An invitatiou was received from the Immigration and Land Settlement Leagiue for the Council to send a representative to the conference of that body to be held on. Wednesday. Tim Mayor stated that this was a moat, important matter for the district and on his motion it was decided that Cr Boddie represent the Council. The Agricultural Department wrote drawing attention to the growth of noxious weeds at the dump at Te Kumi. The Mayor stated that the clearing of the land was a big job. It was 11a use pruning the blackberry, for it would have to be grubbed. On his motion the matter was referred to the now CouncilA letter was received from the Fire Brigade, asking if the Council would make a grant of a lump sum as before. On the motion of the Mayor, it was decided to recommend a renewal of the agreement to the incoming Council. THE BRICK AREA. The Mayor stated that a request had been received from a business man of 'the town for permission to erect an iron shed in Taupiri Street, to ho used as a workroom. His reply was that as the area affected was in the brick area, he refused to give the permit. Cr Peterson remarked that an iron garage had been erected on the adjoining section and asked if permission had been granted in. that case. The Mayor stated that he had no objection to a garage being erected provided it was used as a garage, hut he had a strong objection, to anything in the nature of a workshop being erected except in brick or concrete as provided by the by-laws. The applicant might make a further solicitation to the new Council, but he (the speaker) would refuse to consider the matter. It was decided to take no action.

GENERAL. The Mayor stated that the term of the engineer’s engagement would terminate before the next Council met, and he felt that in the interests of the Borough, every effort should be made to retain Mr. Mainland’s services. The Mayor then moved that it be a recommendation to the incoming Council to engage Mr. Mainland for a further term. Mr. Boddie seconded the motion, paying a tribute to the good work of Mr. Mainland. Cr. Blackman was strongly of the opinion that pressure should be brought toi bear on the Main Highways Board to make a larger grant for the Awakino Road, which was in a disgraceful condition. The Mayor said that there were signs that the Highway Board would be showing greater activity this year and better grants for local bodies would be made.
