A statement made at a recent meeting of the W.E.A. in Timaru was that there are between 600 and 700 governing bodies in New Zealand. It was also said that democracy was less pronounced in New Zealand now than it used to be, and this was attributed to two main causes—centralisation in Wellington by the Government (which robbed the people of their interest in local institutions), and increased prosperity, which caused people to become more pleasure-loving and less inclined to take a serious interest in things that matter.
