MAKING COWS CONTENTED.
Making cows contented with life, to ensure a plentiful supply of milk, is now one of the chief duties of a dairyman, judging by the efforts of .Mr. J. G. Sterchi, of Knoxville, Tennessee, who uses wireless, individual drinking-pails, and atrractive stalls, to bring cheer and happiness to his herd.
At one time the cows were regaled with music from a gramophone, but Mr. Sterchi, possibly feeling that they would become discontented if not given the latest innovations, installed wireless in the byre. Dance music from night clubs appears to l be that most enjoyed by the cows, but Mr. Sterchi has found, that songs, such, as “My Old Kentucky Home” and “The Rosary” soothe the animals when they feel in a sombre mood, and make them give sweeter milk. Mr. Sterchi is continually studying the whims of his herd, and says that he is now considering hanging cages of singing canaries in the stalls to sing to the cows, and make things still more pleasant for them.
