MAGISTRATE’S COURT.

THIS MORNING’S CASES. -Mr Orr Walker, S.M., presided at the sitting of the Magistrate’s Court this morning!. Leu De aeon, for driving a motor vehicle without a driver’s license, was convicted, and ordered to pay costs 7s. For allowing stock to wander Taka Hakaraia was convicted and ordered to pay costs LI 8s 6d, and To Hiko-o-te-Rangi was fined JO.s and costs 29s 6(1. SERVICE CAR LICENSES. William Hammond (Mr Vernon) was charged with driving a motor vehicle used for hire without such vehicle being duly licensed to ply for hire, contrary to the by-laws of the W aitonio County Council. Air Mackersoy, who appeared for the Council, said this was the first prosecution under a new by-law passed last April. It was nothing to do with the heavy traffic regulations and license at all. A license fee of L'2 was provided for. His Worship- said he took it that the purpose ol the license was to ensure that service cars were in fit order to ply for hire and that the Jec was supposed to be charged to cover the cost of inspection. .Mr Vernon said lie had not yet had an opportunity of looking into Hit case. He suggested that the case be adjourned till next court day. Defendant’s employer had a large number ol cars and all the cases might be taken together. His Worship agreed to adjourn the rase, remarking that if the by-law was good defendant’s employer would have to license all his cars.
