It is not always a mania for speed which prompts a motorist to travel fast (remarks an exchange). One who had a puncture, and who had some distance to travel where garages were not on the roadside, was in the unfortunate position of having to put on a tyre which had seen considerable service, and as he doubted if he could reach home, decided to go slow. Sighting a car ahead of him he put on speed over the limit, and got in front. When asked by his companion why he had done so, he remarked: "If I have another puncture now, I'm all right. Whether the farmers are anticipating a trying winter and wish to get rid of their wethers now it. is difficult to say, but never in the history of the local freezing works (states a report from Feilding) has there been such activity as at. present. Stock is coming from north, south, east and west, and, what is more important, is in excellent condition. The wethers, particularly, are very prime, so much so that the slaughtermen have been rotased to enthusiastic comment. Sheep are coming from all parts of the King Country as well as from local districts, so that the killing boards are working at high pressure. The slaughtering of beef was commenced at the heginning of this week, and it is expected that the works will remain busy well into next month. Don'it suffer from cold feet.
