THE STRANDED CYRENA.
14 FEET OF WATER IN HOLDS
PLIGHT NOT HOPELESS
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) Wanganui, this day.
The plight of the oil steamer Cyieua, which went ashore at the iunnil.li of the Wanganui River on Sunday morning, is serious, but is not as yet considered hopeless. The vessel has 14 feet of water in the holds, but the engine room is dry. The weather is 'calm, and a start has been made to unload the ease oil cargo. When that is completed an accurate survey oi the damage will be possible, and! it will be known whether the vessel can be patched and toKved off.
The vessel first struck at a point where it was believed a clear three feet of water was beneath the hull, and the obstruction is surmised to be a sunken log. The initial injury was so serious that the steamer had to be beached to prevent her sinking in the fairway. The Terawhiti lias arrived and is now standing by.
