TERRIFIC STORM IN SYDNEY.
WORST FOR YEARS
(Press Association.—Copyright.) (Received 12.10 p.m.) Sydney, this day
The heaviest thunderstorm experienced in Sydney for many years burst over a portion of the metropolitan area last night. Torrential rain, with terrific thunder and vivid lightning, fell in the city and suburbs, disorganising traffic during the busy hours, when everyone was wishing to get home after work.
In some places the electric light failed, and drain pipes were not sufficient to take the water away, so that flooding occurred at many points.
Some parts of Circular Quay were two feet under water. Many gutters overflowed, and several minor casualties occurred through the people not seeing the kerbstones and falling into the water. At Neutral Bay a woman was swept off her leet and carried into a storm water drain. A man who attempted to rescue her was nearly drowned, having to be sent to the hospital in a serious condition. At North Sydney the streets were two feet deep under water. At one place the fire engine was employed to pump water away from the cellars. Many shops in the city suffered considerably, and there was scarcely a tramline on which the trams were not derailed, owing to the silt blocking the rails. A cloudburst occurred at Newport and did immense damage. Rain is still falling heavily but the clouds are breaking.
