SLIPS ON THE RAILWAY.
SUCCESSION OF MISHAPS. At 6.30 last night the railway authorities received advice that three chains of line at Waimiha had been washed away. Later in the evening it was found that what had actually happened was that a culvert had been destroyed. A serious washout at Taringamotu, near Taumarunui, was also reported. The Department’s telephone and Morse lines were down, and the post office telephone communication with Auckland was also interrupted. The limited express from Auckland was cancelled, the northbound limited was stopped at Taihape, and the “ordinary” at Ohakune. At 4 a.m. the culvert at Waimiha was repaired, and the train which left Te Kuiti at 4 p.m. was able to proceed to Frankton, The passengers had to spend the night in their places, there being, of course, no accommodation at Waimiha.
PORO O-TARAO TUNNEL BLOCKED
About midnight a slip came down at the mouth of the Porq-o-larao tunnel. Some 15 yards of the line was buried deep in slush, and traffic through the tunnel completely blocked. A special train was sent from Te Kuiti this morning to bring in passengers from all station north of Poro-o-tarao.
