MOTOR CYCLE TRIALS.
HAWERA-TE KUITI RUN. FIFTEEN COMPLETE JOURNEY. Motor cycle reli-.il>ility trials oi' the severest nature were those carried out under the auspices of the Hawera Motor Cycle Club on'Friday and Saturday last, the course being from Hawera to Te Kuiti and back to Hawera, a total distance of about 300 miles.
The recent heavy rains had reduced the roads in many places on the northern end of the trip to a veritable quag-mira, and only the very best riders and machines survived the trip. Of the 49 nominated U 7 left Hawera, 25 reached Te Kuiti and only 15 returned to Hawera on Saturday. The actual results will not be known for a few days as the reports from the various checking stations along the route have to-'be sent in and the points allotted on the various phases of the trials.
In unfavourable weather the riders were despatched at five minute intervals, commencing at 8 a.m. Mr F. Lysons controlled the starting with the assistance of Messrs L. 0. Hooker, E. Evans and W. Adams. At the end of the trip Messrs F. Lowe and A. Cressy examined the machines for faults and breakages. The riders report that the roads, especially between Mokau and Awakino, .were in a shocking condition. and in many places the machines had to plough through deep, slippery mud and lagoons of water. In some places teeming rain was experienced, and the conditions could scarcely have been less comfortable. Several breakdowns occurred on the way to Te Kuiti and a dozen machines did not get through.
The return journey was even worse ami iut least three riders did not face the trip.
