A clergyman, who owned a farm, ran it on very economical lines, so that it paid splendidly; but sometimes the good man carried his economies a point too far. As he was taking his usual stroll over his broad acres one hot, oppressive morning, he saw a ploughman sitting on the handle of the plough. It occurred to the minister that he paid this man 5d an hour, and he stopped and said gently, but reproachfully, “James, wouldn’t it be a good plan for you to have a pair of pruning shears here, and be cutting a few bushes along the fence whilst the horses are taking their rest?” James returned the minister’s seirous gaze, and in the same voice, answered, “And might I suggest to you, sir, that you take a tub of ’taters into the pulpit and peel them when the anthem is on?”
