FRANCE’S RECOVERY.
In speaking of France to a Manawatu Times reporter, Mr M. A. Eliott, of Palmerston North, who has just returned from a visit to Europe, stated that the country was rapidly recovering its financial equilibrium, and the manufacturing businesses appeared to be very busy. During last season the country grew nearly sufficient wheat for its own requirements, and the woollen trade was particularly active. The battlefields were rapidly being culti-
vated, and there was evidence of intensive agricultural development throughout France. Thc t Frozen meat industry was not extensive there, though there was a certain amount of South American chilled beef marketed in France, Belgium, and Germany at very low prices. The high price of our New Zealand mutton and lamb prevented any market for these) products. Mr Eliott also visited Belgium and part of Germany. He showed the reporter a 100,000 mark note which he had purchased for Id, and which was current at four times its value at the time.
