THE SPAHLINGER TREATMENT.

LATEST CABLES.

FOR TUBERCULOSIS. SERUM FOR NEW ZEALAND. (Press Association.—Copyright.) (Received 10.20 a.m.) London, December 3. During his visit to Geneva Sir James Allen negotiated with the scientist Spahlinger with a view to obtaining the benefits of his treatment for New Zealand. Both Sir James Allen and Dr Collins visited Spahlinger’s laboratory, and are satisfied of the value of the tuberculosis remedy for man and cattle. Dr Collins examined several cases and is satisfied regarding the clinical results. Proposals are under consideration by which New Zealand will finance Spahlinger for one year to the extent of £36,000. Of this, £16,000 will be utilised to transfer the mortgage on his laboratory to New Zealand, £IO,OOO to pay off another debt, and the balance to cover working expenses for a year. This would provide for good but incomplete serum by the end of 1924.

A further £12,000 would provide full equipment and enable New Zealand to have complete serum by the middle of 1925. Spahlinger’s personal debts are estimated at £16,000 secured and £24,000 unsecured to the bank and for running expenses. £24,000 would secure to New Zealand practically the whole output of serum to the end of 1926. Sir James Allen is donating £IOOO and another Anglo-New Zealander £IOOO towards the object. Sir James Allen also appeals to the public for donations towards £56,000, representing half the total cost of the scheme to the end of 1926. He is convinced that it would be a great advertisement for the Dominion, and be a valuable economic proposition for the dairying industry, as well as the greatest benefit to humanity. Mr Massey approves of the scheme and will appoint a Parliamentary Committee on his return to New Zealand, to enquire in regard to the extent of the Government’s financial support.
