SPREAD OF NOXIOUS WEEDS.
MORE THAN TALK REQUIRED. FIRST CHARGE ON LAND. The Inspector of Noxious Weeds to the Stratford County Council in his monthly report placed before the council last week stated that he had spoken to many' of the settlers who had noxious weeds growing on the roads adjoining their properties, hut in his opinion it would take more than “talk” to make them act. The chairman said that in his opinion the expense of cutting weeds should he a lien on the land. In a dairying district it was absolutely necessary to keep weeds in check. Cr O’Neill: But a lot of land is already overburdened. The Chairman: I would be in favour of making it the first charge on the land. If we don’t look after the weeds it will be very hard to keep things going. Cr Were: Other councillors know quite as well as I do that there are many farmers hanging on by the skin of their teeth, and they are not going to go to the expense of keeping the weeds down, in fact would do nothmg. I certainly think the cost of clearing should be a first charge on the land. That might make the mortgagee a. little more careful ip keeping the occupier of the land up to his duty.
