OTOROHANGA COUNTY.

RESULTS OF ELECTIONS

GREAT INTEREST TAKEN. The election of councillors for the newly-constituted Otorohanga County Council was held at Otorohanga on Thursday, and was followed with the keenest interest throughout the district. The voting was particularly heavy in the Waipa riding, for which there were three candidates, practically every ratepayer in the district going to the polk Settlers in the Honikiwi riding did not manifest a very lively interest in the election, only 104 votes out of a possible 350 being recorded. The voting in the Wharepapa riding, for which there were three candidates for the two vacancies, was fairly heavy, a total of 500 votes being registered. The final results were announced on Friday morning by the returning officer, Mr S. J. Fortescue, as follow: — Waipa. Mr W. Irvine (elected) .... 100 Mr C. H. Hobson 67 Mr J. R. The Successful Candidates.

Mr F. Potts (Te Rau-a-Moa) has been a,, most useful and highly respected member of the Waitomo County Council for many years, for which body he has usually been returned unopposed. He is a member of the Waikato Hospital Board, and has a thorough grasp of all local body business. His great experience and his high integrity will make him an invaluable member of the council.

Mr William Irvine (Waipa) is a successful farmer residing at Otewa. He was the selected candidate of .the Otewa settlers.

Mr J. B. Cooper (Mangaorongo) is a successful Kio Kio dairy farmer. He has been connected with the Kio Kio School Committee and other settlers organisations for a considerable period, and is also a prominent member of the Otorohanga Bowling Club. Mr H. A. Lurman (Mangaoi’ongo) is a well-known pedigreed stockbreeder residing in the Waipa Valley. He is a member of the Mangaorongo Road Board, has also sei'ved as chairman of the Waipa Drainage Board, and was selected as one of the witnesses to give evidence before the Local Bills Committee at Wellington, in connection ,with the partitioning of the Waitomo County. Mr B. Budden (Honikiwi) has been farming in his district for the past 22 years, and has been a prominent member of the Otorohanga Farmers’ Union since its inception. He takes a keen interest in local body affairs, and has always been a strong supporter of the new county. Mr J. B. Tcasdale, Junr. (Wharepapa) is a son of Mr J. B. Tcasdale, of Te Awamutu, and has three farms in different parts of the district. Like his father, on other local bodies, he should be able to render valuable service to the new county. He is a member of the Wharepapa Road Board, and was chosen by that body to stand in their interests at the election.

Mr J. T. Young (Wharepapa) was also the selected candidate for the Wharepapa Road Board, and is a director of the dairy association. He has a dairy farm of considerable dimensions at Ngaronxa, and is a brother of Mr J. A. Young, M.P. for Waikato.
