HYDRO-ELECTRICITY.
(To the Editor.) Sir., —I was much surprised at the disparaging remarks of the Mayor and councillors of Te Kuiti in regard to the action that Otorohanga had, or had not, taken, re the Marakopa power scheme, also, with your comments thereon. I understood the Marakopa scheme would be adopted, if the Government would give a definite undertaking that it would purchase the surplus power. Otorohanga, like Te Kuiti, has been'waiting for that answer, which does not appear to be forthcoming. There are those in Otorohanga who have supported, and would support, the scheme, and all things being equal, no doubt but that Otorohanga would have joined in the enterprise, as it is, in my opinion, the best local scheme that has been under review. Had the Arapuni scheme been indefinitely deferred, Marakopa should have been pushed forward with all possible speed, but such remarks will not engender the most friendly relations that should exist between the two centres. Otorohanga will look before it leaps (as it appears Te Kuiti is going to do) in seeking for some less expensive scheme.—l am, etc., B. BUDDEN. Honikiwi.
