A WAR TROPHY.
HOWITZER FOR TE KUITI. NOW ON RORA STREET GREEN. The war trophy allocated to Te Kuiti by the Government arrived yesterday morning, and was duly mounted and set up on the lawn opposite the Bank of New Zealand. The gun is officially described as "No. 1046 B.L. HOm.m. field gun." It is of the howitzer variety, popularly known amongst "Diggers" as the deadly "five-point-nine." This type of gun was used by the Turks in shelling the Anzacs from the Asiatic side of the Narrows at the Dardanelles. The local gun is of German manufacture, with a range of eight to ten miles, and is one of a number captured by the New Zealand Mounted Brigade under General Allenby at the "second Gaza" offensive in Palestine. Though the sights are missing, and the parts at pi-esent are badly rusted, the gun will always remain a silent tribute to the gallantry and courage of the men that were responsible for the Allies victory in Palestine.
