BURNED AT SEA.
SHIP LOST OFF CHATHAMB. TWO BOATS SAFELY LANDED. EIGHT MEN STILL AT SEA. Wellington, Saturday. The General Post Office has received the following wirel=ss from the Chatbams today:— _ "It is reported that the ship Arzan, bound from Wellington to San Francisco, was burned three hundred miles east of the Chatham Islands and abandoned on Christmas evening. Captain Larsen and thirteen of the crew in two boats landed at Kaingaroa at 11 pm. yesterday. One boat with the first and second mates and six men ia still at sea. The local Customs officer is endeavouring to send out a local launch to search if the weather is favourable."
The Arzan arrived at Wellington from 'Frisco on October 10th with case oil and general cargo consigned to Levin and Co., and left here for 'Frisco on the 18th inst., with a full cargo of flax and tallow. The vessel was 1939 tons net, and was built in 1893.
