AMUSEMENTS.

EMPRESS PICTURES. Good pictures and good houses have been the order during the past Week at the order during the past week at the above pictures. This theatre is now under now management, the present management having had a large and varied experience in the moving picture business. To-night and Monday the special feature is entitled "Friday the 13th," and the film abounds in realistic scenes of the huge gambling indulged in by the brokers and speculators of our large cities. Robert Warwick plays the leading part. On Tuesday and Wednesday next "Tangled Fates" will be presented, and with both programmes an up-to-date Graphic dealing with scenes at the great war theatre will be included.

PEOPLE'S PICTURES. For to-night and Monday another Metro masterpiece will be screened entitled "Cora," in which Emily Stevens is Been in the leading role. The picture is described as very much out of the ordinary, and ia something worth seeing. "Leaves from a Mother's Album," a "Topical Budget," and "Change of Luck," are the supporting features. On Tuesday and Wednesday Beverly Bayne and Francis Bushman will be featured in "Pennington's Choice," a film in five acts.

A very pleasant social was given in the Maori House last evening, which took the form of a farewell to Private N. Thompson, of Kihikihi. Dancing began at 8 and was continued until early this morning. Many returned soldiers neglect making applications for a Government pension till they are finally discharged and some even delay later than that, with the result that a large portion of the grants made by the Claims Boards of the Auckland Patriotic and War Relief Association is for the purpose of filling the interregnum from the date of the soldier's discharge to the date when he received his Government pension. Aa a means of alleviating theße calls on the funds of the board it was suggested in a report submitted by the board to the Patriotic and War Relief Association on Wednesday that the pensions should be applied for on the date the soldier receives notice of his provisional discharge. "It would assist our funds," the report continued, "If the Government made this clear to all returning invalid men."
