DEFAULTING RATEPAYERS.
DISCUSSED BY COUNCIL. At Monday evening's meeting of the Waitomo County Council the cleric drew attention to the fact that a loss of about £4OO in Government subsidy had been made last year in consequence of the large number of ratepayers who" failed to pay their rates in the limit of time set by the Government for contributing the jsubsidy on rates collected. A number of ratepayers were now forwarding their rates less the 10 per cent. Which had been added and claiming to be placed on the roll. This was in view of the coming election, and he wished the Council to understand the position. The County solicitor had advised tbat the 10 per cent, should be paid before the ratepayers were entitled to be removed from She defaulters' list. Cr Potts said he was Bure a considerable number of ratepayers did not understand the loss that was being sustained by the Council in failing to pay up in time. If the ratepayers all paid up in time to ensure-the subsidy it meant obtaining 25 pee cent, additional. Probably: if the sate were struck at the earliest possible time the money would come in better. He thought it very important that the whole of the ratepayers should be made acquainted with the position. Other councillors agreed with the speaker's remarks and urged that every effort should be made to have the rates collected in time.
