LIGHT RAILWAYS.

DISCUSSED AT FARMERS" CONFERENCE. [my t;:ux.K -I'Rtss ASSOCIATION.] Wellington, This Day. The question of light railways for rural districts came up lor discussion at the Farmers' Conference to-day. In introducing the subject, Mr Ross (Auckland) said he did not advocate private railways as a whole, but he thought the advantages were decidedly in favour of branch railways being constructed by private enterprise. Th« State did not build railways as efficiently a private companies. He wan strongly of opinion that 1 ij*ht railways would confer a great benefit upon the rural district! and back blocks. After discussion the following motion was carried: —"That the conference urge the Government to adopt a progressive policy for the construction of branch lines, and development of a system of light railways, and in cases where the Government cannot undertake their construction to afford facilities for the work being under taken by a local body, or by private enterprise on the lines of the Belgian system."
