TE KUMI WATER SUPPLY.

DISCUSSED BY COUNCIL. When the Borough Council applied to take under the Public Works Act the sanitary reserve near Te Kumi, the area was granted to the borough subject to a water supply being provided forthe pah at Te Kumi. It was suggested by the commissioner that two wells should be sunk at the pah, or that a supply should be obtained from a creek and piped to the pah. Some time ago the council decided to connect tha pah with the town supply by running a three inch main to the borough boundary and connecting from that with an inch pipe to thß pah. On Monday evening, in discussing the matter Cr Spencer said the Work? Committee had decided to recommend that a temporary well should be sunk, with a view to having the water analysed. He was strongly in favour of having the wells put down in place of giving the Maoris the town water. The cost of giving the water Would run to nearly £3OO, whereas the wells would cost about £3O. They also had to consider that once a town water was given to the pah it would always bs available to the owners of that land, and there would be no check on the supply. If the land wa9 subdivided there might be a big population getting the water for all time. He advocated the well system as being altogether cheaper and to the interests of the council. The recommendation was adopted.
