WAITANGURU.

Own Correspondent. In a previous report I inserted a brief account of our factory, and with sentiments of justice towards our settlers, I contend it behoves me to furnish a fuller vocabulary of the details leading up to its erection. Not only are they brimful of interest, but also are they entirely worthy of publication, that the outside community may become acquainted with the fact that Waitanguru settlers are somewhat isolated and seldom heard of, they are nevertheless by no means dormant. The promptitude they 'have displayed in putting their proposal into working order is sufficient evidence in corroboration of this to substantiate it. Those who are faimilar with the requirements of a district pror to the erection of a factory realise that many achievements must eventuate, and the mere suggestion of such a scheme speaks forcible volumes of a district — that it must essentially be in an advanced condition to warrant the success of its own "concern." This can fearlessly be said of Waitanguru. and to prove this is no exaggeration, One has only to view the surrounding country, the majority of which is now under productive pasture, and he will udoubtedly agree that it is hardly comprehensible to imagine that it is only six years since dense, impenetrable bush substituted what now are Valuable farms, just the right, class to produce butterfat, and to ensure a firm foundation for the dairying industry in Waitanguru. It must be remembered in speaking of this factory that it is only two years since the first cow was milked for dairying purposes here, and the manner in which the cream was disposed of is worthy of mention, in the hope that it may accomplish a little towards lightening the burden of the backbiocker. The cream was despatched by packborse to Marakopa Factory, a distance of 15 miles, the whole road throughout being of a very bad and dangerous nature. Taking into consideration the time in travelling and the continued jolting the cream received, it is reasonable to believe that by the tme it had reached its destinaton it had considerably deteriorated. This the settlers did for two seasons, principally because they had no other remedy; but very litle time elapsed before they anihilated that reason and agreed to claim their independence by building a factory or their own, thus dispersing all worry incurred by the Marakopa trip. The prompt action of our settlers is in my opinion an exceptional case, for it is usually the habit of men to "sic tight" in fear of venturing out, and when the establishment of a co-opera" tive factory is suggested they "hum and ah" about it so long that when at last its advent is assured they regret deeply their procrastination. It is very obvious, however, that the present progressive and advanced stage of this factory is the outcome of a sound combination of men, whose best interests lie in making for their district a reputation, and, without fear of contradiction or of being convinced to the contrary, I declare' that once made will be maintained.
