MOKAUITI.

Own Correspondent,

MrC. K. Wilson, M.P., paid ua a visit on February 27th, and received a deputation of the settlers at Mr Messenger's, bouse in the evening. Messrß Messenger and Kirk acted as spokesmen. One of the most important matters brought before the member was the size of the school, which is about to be erected here. The number of children at present on the roll is 48,- and the department is having a shelter shed school erected. The size of the school is 23.6 by 15ft, whch is considered to be altogether too small for the requirements of the place. According to the board regulations each child is entitled to 10 square feet of space. Of course in the back blocks it does not matter.

The state of the road was also dealt with. The sum of £7OOO was voted for this road some few months ago, and settlers are beginning to feel anxious, for with the present rate of progress it will be a long time yet before the road is in a fit state for wheel traffic.

Mr Wilson assured the deputation that the matters brought before him would receive his immediate attention. So far about three miles of tram has been laid, and I am informed that the department does not intend to proceed any further with the tram laying, the intention being to put sandstone on the balance. This is considered to be a useless waste. It was understood by the settlers when the money was voted that the road was to be metalled, but now we find out that the only metal to be put on is the first three miles, and that in the open country, where the road was never really bad. We have heard a good deal about mal-administration in the past, but the same old; thing is still going on.
