King Country Chronicle SATURDAY, JAN. 18, 1913 THE AGRICULTURAL SHOW.

The forthcoming show under the auspices of the King Country Central Agricultural and Pastoral Association is at present rivetting the attention of settlers throughout the district, and if the freely expressed wishes of the people are fulfilled a record success should attend the show. Probably no other function attracts universal interest as an agricultural show. To country people the interest is natural, while townspeople to a i large extent find irresistible attractions in a function which is eßßentially representative of the farming resources of the country. The initial show, held last February, was, Bomewhat marred by bad weather, and considering the difficulties under . which the committee and officials worked, the success which attended their efforts was remarkable. In extending the function to two days this year the association has taken considerable extra responsibility, but there can be little doubt as to the wisdom of the step. It must be borne in mind, however, that the association in deciding upon the extra day relied upon the utmost support from the settlers generally. Without the hearty and practical interest of every settler in district it is difficult for the association to carry the function to a successful issue, and it is to tbe devoutly hoped the realisation or this significant fact will spur every individual to exert himself in the interests of the district as a whole. It requires little discrimination to realise what an important part a pros. perly organised A. and P. Association *" plays in any district, and in a newly settled and progressive locality such as the King Country the benefits cannot be over estimated. As an educational factor to all the show stands unrivalled. Settlers from far and near have the opportunity afforded them of comparing their farm stock with the standard articles, and are' thus given the incentive to produce the best animals or other product of the farm. What is possible for one is possible for another in the same line of business, and experience has taught that the production of the best is the ' most profitable for the farmer. The • responsibility resting on the settlers to make the show a success in every respect should not be disregarded, ? and it is to be hoped the trouble of exhibiting will be rated lightly in comparison with the good which will accrue from widespread, practical sytri- , pathy. JThe thanks of all are due to those who inaugurated the association, and to the. members who have borne the brunt of the oragnising work. The most practical recognition which can be accorded by the settlers generally is the willing support on show days, both in the matter of entries and attendance.
