A STRANGE DISAPPEARANCE.

A sensational disappearance is reported from Petone. A man named Carter was proceeding to lock up his house, which is ( isolated and surrounded by trees,; when he heard a man approaching from behind. Seeing Carter, the ,man 'bolted. Carter "called to his son, who had just retired, and he jumped out of the window and chased, the burglar over the fence. Neither has been seen sincei No one saw Carter jump through the window, but it is presumed that he must have done so as soma of his clothes were in hisvroorn. '[-'.■■"' ''*£/-'\V:i ! . . Carter holds a chief engineer's certificate, and had' been absent from or seven years. ■.•;■• Later. : Carter, who returned to his home at Petone last night, says he chased the supposed burglar, but fell and sustained, concussion. remembered no more until yesterday, when he found himßelf on the.- Wainui hills, where he had camped, on a previous occasion. He suffers |no ill effects* except sore limbs^and an- ache in the side of the head.
