HONIKIWI.

Farmers are now busy With their sheep again, the young lambs especially needing much time and attention. The weather has been very bad of late, and it seems as though we are going to have a repetition of last year's climatic conditions. In many fiocKS the death rate of lambs and ewes has been fairly large and taken all round most settlers have lost a fair percentage. However, the total should be better than last year, when the grass was nowhere near so plentiful as it has been this. A meeting of the settlers was held in the schoolroom on 14th inst., and despite the unpropitious weather a fair number were present. The dairy farmers, however, did not attend.
This was rather a pity seeing that it was proposed to try to fix matters up in connection with the cartage of cream to Otorohanga during the present season. The ever-ready road question was early brought to the fore. Tho chairman (Mr Lakeman) reported that he had sent a letter to the chairman of the Waitomo County Council, asking him whether he would attend the meeting of the settlers in Honikiwi. After a great deal of delay a letter of refusal from the chairman of that august body was received. It was then proposed to send a deputation of five to the next meeting of the Council to find out how matters really stand. The road, although supposed to be metalled, is disgraceful in many places, and if the authorities think that the settlers are going to stand idly by and watch their money wasted, they are greatly mistaken.
