FATHER AND SON.

LATTER FATALLY SHOT.

A sensation was caused at Fortbury Crescent, St. Clair, Dunedin, at midday on Saturday, the cause being a shooting affray which took place at the residence of Robert Turner. It appears that Percy John Turner had some words with his father, Robert Turner, before going to work, the altercation being due to the father having been out of employment for some time. The son. it is alleged, ordered his father out of the house, and assaulted him, and then went away. The father, incensed by the son s conduct, lay in wait for him when he came home and shot him in the side. Dr Lindon was summoned, and he ordered the removal of the injured man to the hospital where it. was found that the injuries were of such a character as to necessitate an operation.

The bullet entered the left side, a few inches below the armpit, and penetrated some of the organs below. It was extracted, and then it was seen that there was little hope of the young man's recovery.

The police made arrangements to have his depositions taken, but this was out of the question, as he was in an unconscious condition. Robert Fraklyn Turner, an elder brother, said that he heard the report of a gun coming from the direction of the stable and saw his brother fall, and then his father rushed out of the stable with a gun in his hand. He had never seen the gun before. After the shooting the father ran into the street, where he was met by a neighbour named Ross, who took the gun from him. Then they went to tho South Dunedin Police'; Station, where Turner gave himself up, saying he had shot his son in the arm. He denied subsequently any intention (o kill his son. . Percy Turner succumbed to his injuries at 6.40 o'clock in the evening. He was employed as a commercial traveller. The father was charged with murder and committed for trial.
