OBITUARY.

DR P. J. MUSSEN. The death occurred this morning of Dr P. J. Muasen, father of Mr H. A. Mussen, of Te Kuiti. Dr Musaen had reached the ripe age of 83 years and about ten days ago fell victim to an attack of influenza. The old gentleman gradually became worse, and passed avvav peacefully in the early hours of the morning. Dr Muasen was the eldest son of the late Rev. J. Mussen of Belfast. Ho was educated at Dublin University, where he obtained diplomas for medicine, surgery and midwifery. Coming to New Zealand in the early fifties, Dr Mussen served throughout the West Coast Maori War, both in the capacity of medical officer and of volunteer. He served under General Cameron and Colonel Whitmore, and was also attached to the Forest Rangers under Major Von Tempsky. At the relief of Pipiriki Dr Mussen attached to the relieving expedition. His last service was with the Kai Iwi troop undjr Captain Bryce, bruther-in-law to Dr Mussen. The interment, which will be strictly private, will take place on Friday. THOS. JOHNSTON. Mr Thomas Johnston aged SI, a building contractor, Marokopa, died suddenly after finishing his mid-day meal on Saturday last. Mr Johnston had been ill for some little time previous, and had just bean about for a few days before the sad occurrence. Dr Campbell Jenkins, of Kawhia, who had been attending Mr Johnston prior to his demise, gave a certificate of death, without the necessity of holding an inquiry into the sudden end. Deceased, who was an old resident of Taranaki, has been in the district during the past four years, and was highly respected. The funeral took place on Monday in the Kiritehere cemetery, at which there was a large and representative attendance of settlers of tho district. Deceased leaves a wife and seven children to mourn their loss. —Own Correspondent.
