FEEDING SALT TO HORSES.
I feed salt to my horses every evening with success. A farmer should use good judgment in feeding salt. A mare that is raising a colt will always eat more salt than one that is not, because she is, or ought to be, eating more grain. If a horse is fed a small amount of salt every evening you will seldom have a case of colic or azoturia or any kind of disease. Regular salting keeps up guud action of the kidneys, and that is what carthe poison from the body, and then they will seldom contract any kind of disease. I never had a horse start to crib bite for me either. I think a great many commence that habit by biting and licking on the trough. If you give them out a great many commence that habit by biting and licking on the trough. If you give them a little salt every evening they will lick at that in place of the edge of the trough. Some young horses will bite on the edge of the trough on account of their teeth hurting them. By giving free access to sale and water they will never take too much at once. That is cheaper than colic medicine or doctor's bills. I also feed my brood sows about a teaspoonful once a day in their slop as soon as the pigs are about two weeks old. If you feed a sow heavily on grain and give no salt, she is liable to lose control uf her rear end.' —Mr A. M. Hurst, in the Agricultural Gazette.
