CORRESPONDENCE.

(Letters for publication, anil articles for insertion must be accompanied tnot necessarily for publication), by the name of the writer, and, pn>\ ided they are not offensive in any way, will be published as space permits. The Editor doe* lot identify himself with the opinions expressed iv correspondents, and accepts no responsibility or them.] To the Editor. gj r) —Will you kindly insert a replyto the statement made by Mr C. K. Wilson at his Mairoa meeting with respect to Mairoa school having been obtained by false pretences. Such was not the case, and the statement is entirely misleading. Mr Parr, chairman of the Board of Education, when on his visit to Pio Pio some months ago, to arrange for a school in that district also stated the Maoroa school was obtained by false pretences. This,l claim is quite inaccurate. Mr Petrie. the then chief inspector, visited Mairoa to inspect and report regarding a school. I, acting as chairman, took him round from house to house to inspect and see that number of children was as had been represented to the board. Sixteen children with parenrs who were bona fide settlers in the district were represented, and Mr Petrie reported accordingly to the. board. When the school was opened it started with sixteen on the roll and for a time the number reached eighteen. When Pio Pio school opened three pupils were transferred there from Mairoa and shortly afterwards two or three pupils finished their school course and left. Subsequently a settler with a family of four school children left the district, and this reduced the attendance to nine, whi'-h was the number at the time of Mr Parr's visit to P io Pio. Since then the number has increaed to fourteen. In view of everything I claim that Mr Parr's statement was wrong and chat the school was obtained justly and rightly. Mr Petrio and the patents in the district at the. time can bear out my statements —I am, etc., K. CHESTNUT. Late Chairman Mairoa School Committee.
