KING COUNTRY ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY.
Yesterday Mr F. P. Moorhouse liberated 100 three-year Loch Leveii trout in the Waipa river near Otoro hanga. These trout weie brought from the Auckland Acclimatisation's hatchery at Tirau, and are being placed in this river on account of this stream being the only one to contain trout and the latter, it is stated, agree with the Loch Leven trout better than the rainbow trout. Mr Moorhouse also liberated one cock pheasant and four hens, upon Mr U. M. property at Te Kuiti. A promise has also been made by the Auckland Society to send the King Country Societv 20,0(>0 rainbow fry to be put in the back country rivers as soon as the roads are in a Jit state to take the fish out. A liberal supply of yearlings has also been promised for the same streams. These will come to hand in the autumn. A still further supply for the streams nearer the line will be forwarded in the spring. On the recommendation of Mr Moorhouse the society have decided to rear annually between one and two hundred thousand yearlings for distribution in the streams under the jurisdiction of the society in the place of the fry now liberated, as it is considered that a tremendous loss takes place amongst fry placed in partially stocked streams.
