KAWHIA COUNTY COUNCIL.
The ordinary meeting of the Kawhia County Council was held on Saturday, 18th February. Present -Crs W. J. Shaw (chairman), A. W. Elliott, R. T. Davies, J. E. Nconan, A. W. Babbage and Jas. Kearns A letter was received from the Chief Surveyor to the effect that, a surveyor had been instructed to complete the survey of the harbour endowment to enable the leases to be dealt with. —Resolved to enquire whether the sections could be cut np to agree with the plan under which they were leased. The Public Works Department notified the Council that it was proposed to hand over for expenditure the votes for the Kawhia-Aotea, Whakapirau and Kaimango roads and portion of that for the Hauturn road. Resolved to undertake the expenditure of these votes. Hon. R. McKenzie, Minister of Public Works, notified hi-? intention to visit Kawhia at an early date. The following tenders were accepted:—Contract No. 10, Kawhia to Pirongia road, Scott and Kerr, £l2O Ss 9d; Contract No. 11, Hauturu E. Easy, £59; Contract No. 12, Kawbiak-Marakopa river road, Murray and Love, £92 2s 4d.
A special rate of 3|d in the £ was struck to provide interest and other charges on a loan of £2OOO for the Pirongia West road. It was resolved to request the Public Works Department to have the metal stacked on the Kawhia-Pirongia and Kauri roads carted out and spread as soon as possible. With reference to the vote on the Public Works Estimates for the bridge over the Waipa river on the Kawa road, it was resolved to request the Waitomo County Council to join in urging the Government to construct this bridge as sjoh as possible. Owing to the necessity for expending as much of the available money as possible on the roads before winter, it was decided to engage Mr A. Armstrong, C.E., to assist the engineer in carrying out field work. The engineer was instructed to prepare an estimate of the cost of metalling the Okupata road. A sum of £lO was voted for the purpose of metalling the approach to the Kinohaku wharf. The chairman reported that as a result of his interview with the Minister of Public Works in Auckland, the Minister had promised that in all cases where votes for roads were not actually being expended by tne department, such votes would be handed over to the Council for expenditure.
