PILFERING AT FLAG STATIONS.
NATIVE CHILDREN MAIN CAUSE LETTER FROM MINISTER. The Minister of Railways writes Mr W. T. Jennings, M.P., as follows : "Sir, —With reference to your representations in regard to the loss of goods from flag stations, I have the honour to inform you that the inquiries made go to show that the trouble in connection with goods delivered at flag stations in the King Country is mainly attributed to the natives whose children persist in loitering about the stations. At stations where these children have become troublesome the police have been asked to intervene. In all cases of shortage the police arc immediately advised and vigorous departmental inquiries are instituted. At Hag stations the consignees are invariably impressed with the necessity of taking prompt delivery of goods, but in most cases this is not clone, and it is found that a large number of thefts are due to the consignee's own carelessness. Every care is taken to ensure the safe delivery of goods, and the experience of the department is that it is frequently blamed for delays and shortages which are attributable to circumstances over which it has no control."
