A phrase in one of Earl Cromer's reports on Egypt has resulted in experiments in Germany in the manufacture of a new fuel out of papyrus reeds, which cover thirty-five thousand square miles on the upper reaches of the White Nile, obstructing navigation. The reeds are dried, powdered and compressed into briquettes, which are forty per cent, cheaper than coal. They are used on (he Nile steamers and the Egyptian railways.
