CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
Monthly Meeting.
The usual monthly meeting of Te Kuiti Chamber of Commerce was held last night at the "Chronicle" office, the president (Mr F. PI. Sims), occupying the chair. Licensing Bill. —The Prime Minister wrote acknowledging the protest of the chamber and saying that the terms were noted.
Mokau Bridge. -The Minister of Public Works wrote staling careful consideration would be paid to this matter when compiling the Estimates for the current year. Awakino Valley Road. —The same Minister wrote in precisely the same terms with respect to this question. Railway Station. The president reported that the department now fully recognised the necessity for a complete reconstruction and had given way on all points. It was very gratifying to again find the chamber had justified its existence. New Library.—The president said he had "bean connected with the local library for ten years past. They could not do much, but on 3 of the first things needed was the establishment of a library. The chamber should try to get the Borough Council to establish a new library. The library had a section allotted to it, upon which the present building stands, by Mr Darrow some time ago, vested in two trustees. There is a provision for vesting such a property in the Borough Council. The section had a 40ft frontage. The rental was 25s a year. The borough could combine that site for Council Chamber and a library. Messrs Thorp and Matthew moved that the president, secretary, Mr Jones and Mr Lusk wait on the Borough Council with regard to the library.—Carried. The Loan Proposals.—Some discussion arose on the proposed method of taking the vote, it being held generally that each item in the list of proposed works should be voted on separately. Mr N. B. Lusk and Dr Zobel moved that in the opinion of the Chamber of Commerce the ratepayers should be given the option of voting on each proposal separately in connection with the forthcoming loan. — Carried.
Late Letter Posting.-—-Messrs Lusk and Jones moved that the PostmasterGeneral be strongly urged to erect a pest office box on the railway station to be cleared by the post office officials on the mail train. As the outward mail closes at 7.30 p.m. and the mail train passes at 2.0 a.m. great inconvenience and delay is caused. The train stops five minutes so there is plenty of time to clear and it would be a great boon to the residents of the district generally.—Carried New Members.—Mr Forsyth was duly elected a member. The secretary reported the membership as rapidly growing and now numbering about fifty.
