In 1899 the imports into the North Island exceeded those into the South Island by £784,539. the North Island's imports being £4,727,039, and the South Island's £3,942,500. In 1909 the gap had enormously increased. The North Island's imports were £9,636,416 and the South Island's £5,758,619, an excess in the North of £3,877,797. Tobacco, or at any rate, cigarettesmoking, was lately attacked by the Chief Justice as being an insidious foe oE natural virility. It is, therefore, of interest to discover what countries are the greatest consumers of tobacco. The average annual consumption per head compares as follows:—Holland 6.921b, United States 4.401b, Turkey 4.371b, Western Australia 4.361b, Austria-Hungary 3.771b, Denmark 3.701b, Switzerland 3.241b, Belgium 3.151b, Germanv S,oo|b, New Zealand 2.751b, follow New South Wales, Queensland, Tasmania, South Australia, Canada, France, etc. The energetic American and persistent German are both high on the list. The most moderate consumer (1.231b per head per year) is the Russian —who probably can't afford more—and the Italian consumes nearly as little. The dweller in the United Kingdom has only 1.4111) per head per year to drug himself with.
