Lord Fisher's successor at the Admiralty has begun his work with characteristic thoroughness and independence. His first command was that all the chairs in his room in Whitehall should be instantly removed, save only the chair at his own desk. When asked the reason for banishing these necessary articles of furniture the First Sea Lord is reported to have replied: "[ 3m Jpot going to haye people : dropping (p apd siting abpuj: tp pay time.
