FARMERS' UNION.
Mahoenui Branch. A meeting in connection with the New Zealand Farmers' Union was held last Friday at Mahoenui, to hear an address by Mr Schmitt, the provincial secretary, on the benefits Of membership. Mr E. Moore, who acted as chairman, introduced Mr Schmitt, who spoke on similar lines to the address he gave at Te Kuiti. A branch of the Union was unanimously formed, and the subscription fixed at 7s 6d. M" A. Old was appointed secretary for the first twelve months. It was decided to hold the monthly meetings on the Fridays nearest to full moon. Mr Schmitt was deputed to wait on the ofncer-in-charge of Telegraph Department, urging connection of Mahoenui with Paemako, a distance of twelve miles. The remarakble thing is that the posts are in position and actually the wires laid, but the terminal connections have not been made. The result i-? that, if a settler wishes to telegraph from Paemako to Mahoenui it has to go to Te Kuiti, then to Auckland and back via New Plymouth. A telegram from Mahoenui covers the same route reversed.
