"When I went away there certainly would not be much whisky left," was the remark by a witness which convulsed the Court at Te Kuiti on Friday last. Tbe witness evidently possessed a thorough appreciation of local conditions with regard to tbe liquor question. Mr H. E. Rountree, of Auckland is holding a piano sale in McDonald's Buildings, Te Kuiti. for one week. Mr Rountree has sample pianos with bim by James, Woods and Allison. He is prepared to sell on easy terms from 20s per month, and will allow foil value for old pianos taken in exchange. The Minister for Railways declares that there are nearly 130,000 people directly dependent on the Government at tbe present time. Tbis estimate is compiled oo the basis of each official having two dependents, say a wife and one child. It was about time to < "retrench 1"
