A match between A. B. Postlc, the Australian runner, and B. R. Day, the Irish champion, for £2OO aside, at Higginshaw, was won by Postle, the time for the 220 yards being 235. A visitor en route to Hamilton from Kawhia had his overcoat appropriated from the hall of one of the Te Awamutu hotels on Saturday night. Constable Lander was immediately on the scent, and ten minutes after the coat was missed arrested two men with the coat in their possession. They had not time to finish sampling a flask of whisky which they found in the coat pocket, and it was with rather mixed feelings that they saw the Constable take possession of the unfinished liquor.
The conference between representatives of the Waikato tribes and an officer each from the Native Department, which was to have opened at Huntly today, under the presidency of the Hon. A. T. Ngata, to deal with Native blocks in the Waikato, Thames, Kawhia, and portions of the King Country.defining the area for general settlement, and which, if any, portions should in each case be reserved for the use of the Native owners, has been postponed owing to the deaths of Mahuta's nephew and Mr J, Ormsby. The Hon. Ngata, left by the Main Trunk train last night for Wellington, and will return to Huntly at an early date.
The question raised in the Dunedin painter's dispute, whether local bodies come within the scope of Arbitration Court awards, will be referred by the management committee of the Wharf Labourers' Union to the Trades and Labor Council, with the object of having it gone into. Mr D. McLaren says he cannot understand how Judge Sim arrived at such a seemingly anomalous conclusion, seeing that in section 71 of the Act of last year special provision is clearly made to include all local authorities.
The Appeal Court is hearing the case: Commissioner of Crown Lands v. Bennie. The latter is holder of a lease in perpetuity, and claims the right to purchase simple, including.minerals other than gold or silver. Judge Chapman agve a declaratory judgment upholding the contention, and the Crown is now appealing. Mr Myers for the latter and Messrs Skerrett and McKeogb for Bennie. Residents throughout the district will be interested to learn that yesterday, July 7tb, was the birthday of our friend, "W.B " Native modesty restrained us from enquiring the year of his birth. Still, we wish him heartily the time-honoured wish, which conveys so much in few words: "Many happy returns of the day," a sentiment which will be widely echoed.
