OHURA DEFENCE RIFLE CLUB.

Opening Day. Quite a large number of members turned out for the opening match; competitions, sealed handicap, 200, 500 and 600 yards 7 shots at each range ; the first prize being a shooting bag; second, 100 rounds .303 ammunition; third 50 rounds; prizes being presented by nt'ne club. members took part in the competition and some really good shooting was put up. A number of people were present from Matiere and other parts of the district, also from the Waikato and Te Kuiti. During the afternoon, tea and refreshments were dispensed by the ladies, a large marquee having been erected. A ladies' match during the afternoon proved a great attraction, and as many of the competitors had been going in for steady practice previously, much speculation was indulged in as to who would be the lucky ones. The conditions were 7 shots at miniature targets and the shooting in the main being remarkably good; as high as 31 being registered, out of a possible 35. The first prize, a gold brooch set with pearls and rubies fell to Miss M. Loveday, Mrs W. K. Williams winning the second, a lady's riding whip. I understand that the club intends to hold a series of ladies- competitions during the season which will no doubt be appreciated by all. Several valuable prizes have been donated to the club, including a cup from Messrs W. G. Gunson and Co., Auckland. The match committee will meet during the next few days and arrange conditions, etc., for comingmatches, notices of which will be posted on the Club's order board, Mangaroa. Following is the result of the match —thirteen leading scores: —

Range limit under handicap conditions: 200 yards,*32; 500 yards, 33; 600 yards, 3*l. A grand concert was held in the evening, a good programme being placed before a crowded house. Several items were given by friends from Te Kuiti and the Waikato, each being very well received. Mrs Hyde gave great satisfaction as acompanist. The evening concluded with a dance, every one agreeing that a very pleasant time had been spent.
