ARIA.

A movement is on foot for the purpose of getting matters in train for the establishment of a' dairy factory as soon as possible. There is ample grass and a sufficient number of cows in the district to make it a success, and the settlers hope to have the project sufficiently far advanped to start operations next season. The proposed site for the factory is at the Mokau-iti, and it is hoped to obtain sufficient power to work the factory by water. Firewood is a scarce com' modity in the district, and water would be the cheapest power obtainable. In order to further the scheme, the roads leading to the different parts of the district will require to be opened up, so that suppliers can readily obtain access to the factory. It is understood that the road from Pio Pio to Aria is to be completed without delay, and when this is done the through connection with Te Kuiti will be established. The starting of a dairy factory should be a good thing for the whole district, and would also be an extra inducement for the Government to metal the main road to Te Kuiti, so as to allow the butter from outside settlements being carted to the railway. A boarding-house is badly wanted at Aria, and such an establishment should do well. At present travellers and visitors, of which there are many, have to depend upon the hospitality of one or two of the settlers in the township. Needless to say such hospitality is always heartily extended, but it must, at times, be found rather a drag, and an accommodation house would put matters on a much more satisfactory footing for all. There is a good, opening for enterprising people. It is proposed to hold a sports' meeting at Aria during the holidays, and the date will probably be arranged for about New Year. A strong committee has been formed to organise the meeting, and the programme will comprise horse and foot races, field sports, and wood-chopping events. There will be about 1600 acres of bush and open land put grass in the district this season, and feed should be plentiful next spring*
