MAIROA

o The settlers in the Mangaohae are anxiously waiting for work to start on the farther end of Ngapaenga road. A sum of £3OO was placed on the Estimates for this work, and if this was judiciously expended, it should open the road to allow waggons to get through to Mangaohae. If this work was completed by the end of January, it would mean a great saving to the settlers, as grass seed, for 800 acres of bush felled this season, must pass over this piece of road, in addition to fencing wire,;and provisions for next winter.:

Bushfelling in this district is about finished for this season, an area of, roughly speaking, 2,200 acres having been felled.

Mr Jordan, Crown Lands Ranger, has just been around here making his annual inspection. It is to be hoped his inspection of the properties in the Ratanui Block will be the means of bringing selectors up to scratch. It has been generally known for a considerable time that coal exists in the Mangaohae district, and it is reported that a new seam has been recently discovered. A party of workmen on the road are at present using coal from a seam on Mr Murdoch's property, and state that it burns well and gives a splendid heat. It is used in the fires to heat picks and tools for sharpening, and burns to a clinker. This indicates that the coal is of a bituminous nature and in future years, when the bush has given out, should be a valuable asset .

The new mail service to Mangaohae which now leaves Te Kuiti on Saturand goes via Pio Pio, will, after the New Year, leave on Friday, and go via Oparure to Mairoa, thus shortening the journey by about 8 miles,
