GREEKS TRICK NAZIS.
TURN SEAMEN OVER TO ALLIES. “They didn’t know much about the sea, these Germans,” said the grinning young Greek skipper, as he stepped ashore followed by the two Nazi prisoners he was nboul to turn over to the Allied authorities. A serond Greek holding an Italian carbine watched from the raiL “We had a smaller caique in tow,” the Skipper explained in halting English, referring to a small Greek sailing vessel of the type that plies between the Aegean Islands and the mainland. A German guard had been assigned to each of the caiques to see that their owners behaved.
“The weather was port and getting worse. But these two didn’t know that! ” Another crossed the brown face. “The guard aboard my ship was not feeling well, and he stayed in his bunk. “I turned south and waited until we were well out to sea. Then I cut off the motor and sent for him. I told him we had engine trouble and would b« •unable to tow the smaller caique if the weather got any worse, because the tow rope was too short. ‘ ‘l suggested calling the German in the other caique to us, and sent one of my men over in the dinghy. Then my guard decided to have a look at the motor. As he went down into the engine roonj the door slammed behind him.
“I rushed to his bunk and grabbed his rifle. When my boy came back with the other guard we disarmed him, brought the other back on deck, and started for frica. After midnight we saw a ship coming toward us. We thought it must be German, but never did find out. It never saw us.” Concluding his tale, the Skipper and his crew tupned the two sheepish-look-ing German seanjen over to the British and immediately volunteered for service with the Greek Navy.
