"Island Forts” protect Britain’s east coast shipping from low-flying aireraft. Each consists of two concrete towers, 50ft high from the base, connected by a steel superstructure, on which the A.A. guns and equipment are mounted. Fixed to the base is a landing stage of steel joists. The mess decks are in the towers, with a storeroom and magazine below. All the armament is manned by Royal Marines under Naval Reserve Officers. The guns and equipment are supplied by the Army, an interesting ex ample of inter-service co-operation. They have accounted for a number of German aircraft.
