Caught in an avalanche at the head of the Burnett Stream while crossing from the Waimakariri Basin to the Wilberforce Basin, in the Southern Alps, Flying Officer Bruce Banfield, of the Royal New Zealand Air Force Station at Harewood, was killed about 11.30 on Tuesday morning last. Flying Officer Banfield, who was 23 years of age, was married only four months ago, was a well-known member of the Canterbury Mountaineering Club, and an experienced mountaineer, and was considered to have an expert I noledge of snow conditions.
