DOG TRIALS

KAIKOURA CLUB. The annual trials conducted by the Kaikoura Collie Dog Club took place at Mr F. J. Monk’s property, commencing on Thursday morning in fine and sunny weather, with a slight breeze overhead. There xvas a fair attendance of spectators to witness the trials. Mr Maurice Hope, of Blenheim, judged the events, and Mr A. (). Monk was the timekeeper, both officials carrying out their duties satisfactorily. The ladies who had charge of the refreshment booth performed their usual good service, and are worthy of all praise on the manner in which the arrangements were carried out. The arrangements were carried out. The President (Mr IT. Crampton) and Secretary (Miss C. Keehan) had a fulltime job, whilst the stewards and other officials were over-worked as a result of the liveliness of the sheep (loaned by Mr G. Y. Scales. In one instance eight sets of sheep had to be released for the competitor. Sheep men remarked that they had never experienced anything like it. The sheep feared neither man nor dog. On one occasion two men tried to block three sheep, but they rose in the air and actually “drop-kicked” the men. However, it is all in the game and ■competitors took things philosophically and were quite satisfied.

Tn the evening a smoke concert was held in the Band Room, when the valves were opened and the men let off some steam in proposing and responding to the usual toast list. The visitors had an entertaining time, and subsequently those present attended the farewell to the soldiers on final leave. On Friday the weather was again fine, but there was a biting cold wind. No 1 event was completed, but the second event was continued on Saturday morning. Following are Hie results:— Class 1. Open. Heading, Bringing Back and Holding in Ring.
