Miss Joyce Lee (Invercargill) is spending a short holiday in Kaikoura. At least one Christchurch licitor will attend the sitting. Despite the '.'.rather conditions on Saturday night, there was a very good attendance at the' dance held in the Drill Hall under the direction of the Kaikoura Football Club. Music for the dancing was supplied by Mrs Sabiston’s Dance Band, extras being played bv Mrs Sa,biston. Mr J. Lane was master of ceremonies. Supper was served and a very enjoyable dance concluded nt midnight. The death occurred on Wednesday night at Christchurch, of Dr. 11. T I. Thacker. lie was a son of Air and Mrs John Edward Thacker, who cam'’ to New Zealand in the Sir George Seymour, one of Canterbury’s first four hips, in 1850, and who were among Ihe earliest settlers on Banks Peninsula. His faher, formerly editor of the Sligo Guardian, was associated with the earliest journalism in Canterbury, being editor for a time of the Christchurch Guardian before taking up farming nt Okain’s Bay. The late Dr Thacker was Mayor of Christchurch for eight years, and took a keen interest in public and sporting life. He was horn at O’Kain’s Bay on March 20, 1870. A New Plymouth message states: — The determination of the police to stop the practice of youths under 21 years of age drinking in hotels was mention'd by the Senior Sergeant in the Police Court- recently when three vouths were charged with entering a hotel and falsely representing that they were 21 years of age. AH pleaded guilty and frankly admitted that they misled the barman concerning their ages. “I l am glad of the assurance that you do not frequent .bars regularly,” said the Magistrate. “I hope you never do. You won’t he good footballers if you do.” It was explained that the boys had been to a football practice and had decided to have a drink.
