KAIKOURA v. OPAWA. A third grade football match took place at Takahanga Domain on Saturday between teams representing Opawa (Atari bo rough) and Kaikoura the result being a win for the local team by 14 points to 3, the latter score being from a penalty kick .by W Patchett. At no time did the Opawa players look dangerous, although they had several kicks at goal following penalties. For Kaikoura Jim Smith hud a shot at goal, the hall going short, then the local players again took play quickly to the Opawa side of the 25, E. Afackle picked up and took the ball close to the line, where T. ATiles got over but was unable to get the ball down. However he persisted and a few moments later crossed the line, but J. Smith did not imporve on the score. Kaikoura 3, Opawa 0. Following the kick out F. Afclnness gained territory with a run followed .h,v a kick, A. Roberts beingnext to handle the ball, finishing with a kick, the ball going too far, and Opawa forcing. From a penalty P. Keehan had a kick at goal without result, a scrum took place five yards from Opawa line, Comer secured and registered a nice try, which he converted —Kaikoura 8, Opawa 0. T. ATiles got possession, passed to Lane and play was again near Opawa line, where Allies picked up the ball and got over, J. Smith’s kick just missing. Kaikoura 11, Opawa 0. Again play took place near the Opawa line, whert F. Alclmies secured but was unable to get the ball down. From a free kick Keehan had another kick at goal without result. Halftime sounded without further scoring. On resuming an exchange of kicks and line out play took place, and following a free kick near half way Patchett had a kick at goal without result Near the 25 yard line Patchett had another shot at goal without scoring, the .ball going just outside the post. Play moved into Kaikoura territory, and following a penalty kick about 12 yards from the Kaikoura line W. Patchett opened up the scory for Opawa with a nice kick. Kaikoura 11. Opawa 3. Aliles. and Alclnuess had a turn in handling the ball in Opawa 25 line, a free kick relieving the position for Opawa. Play went to the other end, then back to Opawa territory, J. Lane taking the ball along the line from halfway, where he was tackled but managed to transfer the hall to Comer, who got the kick at goal failing. Kaikoura 14, Opawa 3. There was some nice passing by Kaikoura, but no further score. Air Ben Alackle controlled the game. The visitors were entertained at afternoon tea, and a dance in the evening in their honour.
